Capturing perfection: How to get the imagery and footage you want at your wedding

22/03/24

Your special day is coming up! A day filled with some of the most memorable and cherished moments of your life. From the exchange of vows to the first dance, every moment is worth preserving and what better way to relive those precious memories than through stunning photographs and video? Getting the perfect wedding footage is a crucial part of preserving the longevity of the day and telling your unique love story; however, that requires more than just hiring a talented media team. It’s about clear communication, seamless planning, and making thoughtful, intentional choices. If you’re looking to capture the day to its fullest and truly tell your story, here are some tips you definitely want to note down.

Choose the right team: It seems pretty obvious but selecting the right media team is crucial to getting the right imagery. Don’t just look for someone whose profile is big on socials but also someone whose style aligns with your vision,  has good customer service and you actually get along with. Review their portfolio, read testimonials from past clients, and schedule a meeting to get a sense of what their personality is like.

Start with clear communication: Before the big day arrives, arrange a meeting with your media team and planner/coordinator to discuss your vision. Share your ideas, preferences, and must-have shots. Whether it’s candid moments, family portraits, or creative poses, make sure your dream team understands your expectations.

Create a shot list: Closely linked to the previous point, I always recommend putting together a shot list. This is a list of all the essential shots you want to capture on the day. Whether it’s specific poses, groupings, or at particular locations, note in a document which images are important to you. This list will serve as a guide for your photographer and videographer, helping to ensure that no important moments are overlooked.

Embrace spontaneity: Whilst having a shot list is great, also remember that some of the most memorable photos happen when least expected. Be flexible and allow your photographer to capture candid moments that reflect the joy and emotion of the day.

Scout locations: If you have specific locations in mind for your pictures on the day, take the time to scout them beforehand. Arrange a site visit with your team to identify the best spots for different types of shots and consider factors like lighting and accessibility.

Timing is key: Plan your photography schedule carefully to make the most of natural light. Schedule outdoor shots during the golden hour, which occurs during the hour before sunset or after sunrise when the light is soft and flattering. Also ensure you factor in enough time for pictures so they don’t end up being rushed.

Communicate with your guests: Inform your guests about the importance of photography at your wedding and kindly ask them to refrain from taking photos during key moments. This will help minimise distractions and ensure that your professional photographer can capture the best possible shots.

Delegate responsibilities: Designate a trusted friend or family member to assist the media team and planning team  on the day of the wedding. This person can help gather groups for family portraits, identify key individuals, coordinate timing, and handle any unexpected issues that may arise.

Be present in the moment: While it’s essential to capture all the important moments, don’t forget to enjoy your wedding day. Allow yourself to be fully present and immersed in the experience, knowing that your photographer is capturing memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Trust your media team: Remember that you hired them for their expertise and creativity. Trust their judgement and allow them the freedom to experiment with different angles and compositions.

In conclusion, getting the pictures you want at your wedding requires careful planning, clear communication, and trust in your media team. By following these tips and prioritising what matters most to you, you can ensure that your wedding day is beautifully documented for years to come. After all, these photos will serve as timeless reminders of the love and joy you shared on this special day. To get started on planning the wedding of your dreams, send an enquiry through to the team and let’s work together!
