REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD DO A FIRST LOOK ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

24/10/23

As an experienced wedding planner, a practice that has fast gained popularity in recent times is the trend of having a ‘first look’.  If you’re new to this wedding terminology or wondering ‘what’s that?’, a first look is typically an intimate moment between the couple where they see each other for the first time before the ceremony. Historically, couples would wait until the ceremony to see each other for the first time on the wedding day but many modern day lovebirds are challenging this age-old tradition and choosing to incorporate a first look into their wedding day timeline. I absolutely love this trend because it’s a powerful way to enhance your wedding experience and here’s why I think couples should consider incorporating a first look into their special day:

  • Builds intimate connection: The first look allows you to share an intimate and private moment before the hustle and bustle of the ceremony and reception. It sets the stage for a deeply personal connection, allowing you to process the emotions of the day together before you take center stage.
  • Allows an emotional release and eases pre-ceremony nerves: Following on from the previous point, weddings are generally full of many emotions which can lead to nerves and jitters. The first look helps couples soothe each other’s nerves and bask in the love and support that brought them to this important day. A first look can serve as an emotional release for both partners, allowing you to express your feelings freely in a private setting. It’s a safe space for you to share your joy, excitement, and sometimes even nervousness creating an authentic and genuine foundation for the rest of the day, without the pressure of an audience.
  • Provides extended photography time: From a planner’s perspective, the first look extends the window for capturing candid moments and breathtaking portraits. By having a first look before the ceremony, you can extend your photography time meaning your media team can capture stunning, purposeful moments in a relaxed atmosphere, without the time constraints that often follow the ceremony. More time for photography also allows for a greater variety of shots.
  • Helps create a flexible timeline: Where logistics are involved, incorporating a first look can create a more flexible and seamless timeline for the entire day. With the formalities already taken care of, couples can adjust their schedules accordingly, allowing for a smoother transition between the ceremony, photography session, and reception. This flexibility can contribute to a more relaxed and enjoyable day for you and your guests, giving you more time to enjoy the day and be fully present.

While the first look may not be for everyone, it’s important to recognise its potential to enhance the overall wedding experience. If you’re envisioning a wedding day filled with genuine moments, emotional connections, and seamless transitions, consider incorporating it into your day. Remember, it’s not about breaking tradition, but about creating a personal and purposeful experience that truly reflects your love story.
